Information on getting married in the municipality of Aabenraa

Please notice that you have to be present at our town hall 3 days before your marriage appointment for registration purpose. This means that both parties have to be present. You will be required to stay overnight these 3 days, until your wedding is carried out.

Before an appointment for marriage can be arranged, you have to send (by post or email) a copy of the necessary documents including your passport/visa/permit-stay.

At the same time you also have to pay 500 DKK into the following account: Aabenraa Kommune,

Iban nr. DK5879100001424426. Swift kode: SYBKDK22.

According to the Danish marriage act we charge a fee of 500 DKK (about 70 Euro). This covers the examination of the conditions of the marriage an have to be paid before starting the paperwork. The wedding is without further cost.

The marriage declaration “Notice of Marriage”, which [ you find here / is attached ] have to be filled out and must be submitted.

2 weeks after sending the papers, we can make an appointment for your wedding - if the papers are complete.

In Aabenraa you can marry every week on Thursdays and Fridays

We have 2 Marriage Offices:

  • Aabenraa Kommune, Borgerservice, Skelbækvej 2, 6200 Aabenraa,
  • Aabenraa Kommune, Borgerservice, Plantagevej 4, Bov, 6330 Padborg,

The documents required:

If your documents are not issued in Danish, German or English, they must be translated by an approved translator.

  • Valid Passport, if necessary with visa or residence permit
  • Birth certificate
  • Registration of present name, address, citizenship and family status issued by the authorities in your municipality – not older than 2 month
  • Registration of family-status issued by authorities in every country you have lived in during your marriageable age – not older than 2 month
  • If you are divorced – The final decree
  • If you are a widow/widower – Death certificate

Family-status certificates, divorce-decrees and death certificates from outside Europe, (except USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australian) have to be legalized from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from the Danish Embassy in the country, where the decrees or the certificates have been settled. Otherwise they will not be accepted by us.

If your documents are issued in a country, which is member of the Apostil convention ( www.hcch.net ) it is enough to get an Apostil from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in that country.

If you are an American soldier in Germany, you also have to bring:

  • Leave order from your Commande
  • Military ID-card
  • Affidavit from your Commander about your marital status
  • Latest TAX-return

Legal in Denmark
Before travelling to Denmark, please make sure that you can enter Denmark legally. This includes a valid passport and a visa or a permit for the country you are living in and for Denmark, if necessary.

To ensure this, your passport and residence permit will be checked either here at the Town Hall or at the Danish Foreigners Control Department at the Police station, Toldbodvej 8, 6330 Padborg, Denmark

Witnesses
A wedding in Denmark requires 2 witnesses. If it is not possible for you to arrange for two witnesses, we will ensure the presence of the required witnesses.

No change of name
According to Danish Marriage act foreigners cannot change their names at the marriage.

Language
The marriage can be carried out in Danish, German or English. If you do not understand one of these 3 languages you must bring a translator.
